Mediabistro’s Web 3.0 Conference: Get A Jump (and a 20% discount) On The Future

Mollie Vandor

January 26, 2010 8:15 amtoJanuary 27, 2010 3:30 pm

The semantic web — if that phrase doesn’t mean anything to you yet, don’t worry. Pretty soon it will be as commonplace as its close cousin – the ’social web.’ It’s basically a fancy term for the idea of linking all the web’s data to create all kinds of relationships between people, products, sites and more. At its most basic level, it means creating a common language to allow all the individual elements of the internet to communicate and connect. By also making that language more human meaningful, developers can use semantic web principles to put out applications that are better able to comprehend and complement the core structures of our society.

Have you ever used Facebook Connect? Searched for something on Google? Bought a product through an Amazon affiliate link? Any time you do any of these things — and countless more on the big ol’ interwebs — you’re reaping the benefits of the semantic web.  In fact, some of the most exciting and innovative stuff happening on today’s internet is based on this concept. Which is why it’s fitting that for many people, ’semantic web’ is becoming synonymous with ‘Web 3.0.’

Want to learn more? Check out Mediabistro’s Web 3.0 Conference in Santa Clara next week. With speakers like Microsoft’s Mark Johnson and Scott Prevost, Google’s Johanna Wright and Vulcan Inc.’s Mark Greaves, the conference is already shaping up to be a great resource for anyone interested in learning more about the next big movement on the web. Plus, GIT members will save 20% on tickets with code: W3GIT.

Kt

October 12th, 2009
Omaha

Midwestern developers are all abuzz this week in anticipation of the Heartland Developers Conference, an event for building professional skills and cultivating community relationships, taking place Oct. 15-16 in Omaha. With 68 sessions and four development categories packed into two days, HDC is the place to be for software designers, developers, engineers, analysts, architects…you get the picture.

For the first time since the conference began in 2004, Girls in Tech will have a presence at the event to share our mission, experience and passion. We’re excited about networking with fellow techies, but we’re also looking forward to some high quality speakers and sessions. The first day features keynotes by Microsoft’s Scott Guthrie and Adobe’s Kevin Hoyt. The next day is no shabbier, with keynotes by Neal Ford of ThoughtWorks  and Google’s Patrick Chanezon . Session topics range from iPhone dev and jQuery to alternative database technologies and Flex.

If you’ll be attending HDC, let us know at Omaha@GirlsInTech.net and be sure to stop by our booth. If not, follow the action on Twitter with the official event hashtag #HDC09. We’ll be sure to report back with a recap of the conference and its awesome evening events soon.

PICNIC Amsterdam: Color, Creativity and Collaboration

Originally posted on the Geeks on a Plane blog.

At Seedcamp in London, I was talking to a fellow who was interested in learning more about Geeks on a Plane and our itinerary of events. I explained that we 3949646593_5361e9c5cb_mwere headed to Amsterdam for PICNIC, and he responded with, “Wow, you guys must be funded by some great sponsors if you are going to go to Amsterdam just for a picnic.” We had a good chuckle. I’ve only been to PICNIC for about two hours now, however, have been able to absorb the vibrant nature of the event – the booths, graphics on the walls, picnic tables everywhere and some really enthusiastic faces. Impressive.

PICNIC unites thousands of creative minds every year in Amsterdam. PICNIC will surprise you, inspire you and offer a breath of fresh air from your daily routine. PICNIC ‘09 takes place from 23 to 25 September at the Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Don’t miss the year’s most inspiring, fascinating and entertaining festival!

freelance camp

Have you heard of it? The world’s first Freelance Camp was held August 16th 2008  in the amazing coastal city of Santa Cruz, California! The event was to explore and promote the synergy that independent contractors can bring to business today.

Freelance Camp is a place to discuss and explore the different approaches to running a successful freelance business / service company. Events have been based on the Barcamp format, which is a network of user generated participatory events whose content is fully provided by the participants. Anyone with something to contribute or with the desire to learn is welcome and invited to join. Some of the events are free (thanks to sponsors) while other charge a token fee to help cover overhead. Each camp is run by a local team of volunteers and is put on for the benefit of the community (not profit). Any left over proceeds are donated to the organizer’s charity of choice. All the events to date have included breakfast, lunch and an after party.

Who should come? If you sell your services (or are considering it), you are a perfect fit: developer, designer, accountant, blogger / journalist, realtor, lawyer, carpenter, engineer, financial adviser, marketer, sales, musician, artist, inventor… Historically, the bulk of attendees are from the hi-tech industry but Freelance Camp organizers encourage all types of owners to come to provide a balanced perspective to business.

* Get experience based answers to your questions.
* Network and meet people running successful freelance businesses.
* Form partnership and collaborate.
* Find clients.
* Help others and be a person of influence.

Has your curiosity been peaked? Here are details on the next event:

Venue: Rittenhouse Building, Downtown Santa Cruz, CA
Date: Saturday August 15, 2009
Time: 8am – 6pm + after party
Cost: $25 or free if you are a student
Schwag: Klean Kanteen 27oz bottles

We Hear About Success, But We Learn From Failure: FailCon

We Hear About Success, but We Learn From Failure

SNAP Summit – one of the first conferences for social web startups – has announced the topic for their fall event: Failure. They’ve dubbed it “FailCon.” It takes place on October 27th at the Kabuki Hotel in San Francisco. Girls in Tech discount tickets can be purchased at:

FailCon Girls in Tech Tickets

The lead organizer, Cassie Phillipps, writes:
“FailCon’s been developing in my head for the last year; but I wondered if people would really be interested in a day focused on entrepreneurial mistakes.

As I spoke with fellow founders, however, it became clear: failure’s an important topic that people crave to understand and speakers regularly avoid. Many think that failure is the defining moment for an entrepreneur: overcoming it proves that you’re inventive, tenacious, and prepared.

So I’ve decided to host FailCon on October 27th – peak conference season – and keep it incredibly affordable. Like our prior events, I expect 250 – 400 founders, developers, investors, marketers, and bloggers from the web 2.0/social-web sphere to attend. With help from GraffitiPR, we’re also reaching out to a diverse range of entrepreneurial organizations and news stations for some fresh faces.

Some of the topics scheduled include:
The Importance of Team: What variable make a successful founding team? What disagreements should be expected and how do you talk through them? If all else fails, how do you let someone go?
How VCs Handle Failure: What are the early signs of failure that VCs watch for? How do they handle a failing investment, preserve good relations, and protect their assets?

How NOT to Build Social Apps: Why do some viral campaigns flop, and how do you regain trust with your client? What are some things to avoid when designing for the social web? How can you recover a failing app?
Founder Frak-ups: A number of social web entrepreneurs will give short talks about their early mistakes and how they recovered. Invited speakers include:

Max Levchin; Slide (discussing Slide and PayPal)
Mark Pinkus; Zynga (discussing Tribe.net)
Lane Becker and Thor Mullen; GetSatisfaction
Seth Sternberg, Sandy Jen, and Elain Wherry; Meebo
Rashmi Sinha; SlideShare
and more!

I’m still looking for volunteers, sponsors, and companies to demo! More information on the event is at www.snapsummit.com. Email Cassie at cep@rfop.biz with questions and suggestions.

May 7, 2009 9:00 amtoMay 8, 2009 5:00 pm

Girls in Tech is a proud supporter of the inaugural BIG Omaha Conference happening on May 7 & 8th 2009. It’s exciting and quite surprising to know that Omaha, Nebraska is becoming another tech hub, launching a variety of cutting-edge start-ups, hosting Tweetups and most recently this conference, which I’m sure will prove to be fruitful. Girls in Tech founder, Adriana Gascoigne will be speaking on a panel and a variety of Girls in Tech members will be attending to help promote and create awareness for the new Omaha chapter.picture-15

Here is a little more information on the event:

What happens when the country’s foremost creatives, entrepreneurs and innovators descend on one place? That place explodes. Which is precisely what we plan for Omaha.

The energy will be impossible to contain. We will begin building communities, companies and friendships. We will inspire new thoughts and completely new ways of thinking. We will develop visions: personal, shared, and civic. Speakers will come from some of the most innovative companies in the nation. And you’ll hear fantastic stories from numerous emerging businesses.

In the end, you’ll take away a network and an energy that will propel those new connections to greatness. For you. For your business. For your community.

Come to the heart of the Midwest. And let’s rebuild this country from the inside out.
