GIT Social Fashion & Beauty Snapshot

Adriana Gascoigne

March 30th, 2009

We’re really excited that Couture Cult was able to get some AMAZING coverage of the Girls in Tech Social Fashion and Beauty Summit this past week. Here is the video and link. Check it out!

When I heard about the Girls In Tech Social Fashion & Beauty Summit, I thought this would be the perfect event for me to get started on the long promised video content! I was excited to attend this event because there are a lot of big changes coming to Couture Cult, and I am also going to be launching my new venture, a social networking site, within the next month or two… and this offered up a little bit of so many of the things I love: fashion and beauty, tech, networking, and delicious pink colored vodka drinks! I got a lot of helpful information, not only from the formal discussion, but from the chatter during the cocktail party after. The best deals and friendships are made over drinks. It was wonderful to be surrounded by empowered, intelligent, stylish, with-it women who all share a passion for both fashion and business. I met some wonderful ladies and made some inspiring connections and I will be sure to attend the next GIT event that comes to Los Angeles.

Girls in Tech LA and Closet Couture Present: Startup Savvy

Robyn Cohen

February 17th, 2009
Events, Los Angeles
February 24, 2009
6:30 pm

With the success of the Girls in Tech Incubator series that began in San Francisco, it was time to bring it to Los Angeles. Our Incubator events highlight either a young, female entrepreneur and their company or a web company specifically focused on women.startup_savvy_gitcc2

Our first-ever Incubator event for LA will feature Closetcouture.com and it’s Founder, Chris Elia. Closet Couture is a social and fashion utility that connects people of stylish minds with those who live or work around them. CC users manage their wardrobes online, define and refine their personal style, get help if needed, upload unlimited photos, share links and videos, and create their own style cabinet made up of the best and the brightest. Chris started ClosetCouture.com to solve the problem of never having anything to wear despite a brimming closet. Closetcouture.com was named one of TechCrunch50’s best startups last year.

Come and join us as we learn about how Closetcouture.com came to be and Chris’ journey in developing her company. We will also discuss the ins and outs of developing a startup, how to use all the various social media sites to promote your brand or business, and when it’s the right time to go for funding. The event will be held at Blankspaces, LA’s #1 Co-working office space, on Tuesday, February 24th at 6:30PM. Please get your ticket at http://girlsintechlastartupsavvy.eventbrite.com/.

‘Tis the season for gift giving – the Hi5 way

Robyn Cohen

December 10th, 2008
Los Angeles

As the holidays are fully under way with parties, sending out holiday cards, and exchanging gifts, the same spirit can be found in the world of social networks.

Hi5, one of the world’s largest and fastest growing social networks, launches it’s International Virtual Gifts Store. Initially the store will offer an assortment of 36 virtual gifts representing a variety of the world’s customs and cultures. This will give users a chance to celebrate their culture with their family and friends.

Some of the gifts that will be available are a virtual ‘Rosca’, which is a Mexican cake that is traditionally eaten on January 6th for the celebration of the ‘Three Kings Day’.  Also a dreidel, which is a very popular toy for children celebrating the Jewish holiday Hanukkah. As well as many other ornaments and symbols from a variety of cultures around the world.

This is a great way to highlight and celebrate the diversity of the Hi5 user base. Happy Holidays! Felices Fiestas! Chag Sameach!

Searching for the best of?

Heather Lipner

December 9th, 2008
Los Angeles

One of my favorite things about the end of the year is reading all the 2008 best of lists.  Here’s a couple web/design related best of lists, some found here.

Best CSS – You’ll notice a trend in the design of these sites. The design is multi-layered, presenting a tactile approach. It’s impressive because the CSS is coded so the pages still load fast and light. This will be the trend next year as well, with more 3D technology deployed, like cooliris (as mentioned here).

Best Album Art – I am still in like with the Santogold album art. Santogold also made it to a lot of the best of music lists. She is a very strong woman, one to admire.

Best Websites – Oh and Tripkick.com, a site designed by fluidesign, made it to this list! :)

If you know any more design/web related best of lists, please comment here!

Adriana Gascoigne

Girls in Tech is happy to announce the addition of its newest executive member, Robyn Cohen, who will be serving as the executive director of the LA chapter!

Robyn has written a blog entry to highlight why she is excited about joining the growing Girls in Tech team of leaders:

I am very excited to announce becoming the newest member of GIRLS IN TECH. Starting Monday September 15th, I will be taking the position of Executive Director for GIRLS IN TECH LA Chapter.

Having one foot always in the world of tech and innovation, I am very thrilled to be a part of this initiative. My background comes with many years in the Fashion and Beauty industries, with the last couple of years becoming involved with the web 2.0 world. However, I have always been very passionate about keeping up to date with tech. Be it the latest innovation with cars, or the newest operating system for Mac, or the latest gadget to be developed, that’s what I love. It’s about what is going to make my life easier, more interesting and more fun. I want to know about it!

Furthermore, and the most important part of being involved with GIRLS IN TECH, it’s about energizing women. Bringing them together and celebrating those that work in or have a passion for tech. As we know, the industry is dominated by men, but in the last few years women have really been making an impact in the world of tech. So, it’s our job at GIT to empower and educate women of all ages to enhance themselves, their careers and their lives with the exciting world of tech and innovation.

I look forward to working with the entire GIT team.
